Grilled Cheese

Personal Project

Concept:

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is my favorite meal. It may sound a bit silly, but for me, it’s a bit of a self-care ritual. It’s something that can always help me find my center again. It reminds me of home, and takes me back to simpler times. Using this most sacred subject matter, I wanted to work on a personal project that focuses on bread-and-butter design and layout concepts, with some fun morphs and transitions in between them. It's probably the longest amount of time I've ever spent making a sandwich...

Production:

From the onset of the project, I was strangely fixated on the idea of invoking design elements from some early 2000's Quiznos restaurant wall art I remembered as a kid. In particular, I was drawn to the stipple-shading and geometric shapes. Online documentation of the artwork I remember was surprisingly scarce. This image is the only one I was able to track down.

Style frames to choose a color palette, plan out transitions between layouts, and ensure a consistent tone is maintained throughout. I knew I wanted it to feel cozy and understated overall. So shots like the bottom left and middle didn't make it into the final piece, as they felt a little too bombastic compared to the others.
